Comparing ammo by cost per round

Cost per round is the right way to compare ammo, as long as you calculate it on the delivered price and compare like with like.

Ammo is sold in every quantity imaginable: 20-round boxes, 50-round boxes, 500- and 1,000-round cases. Cost per round cuts through that by putting every listing on the same scale. It only works, though, when it’s calculated correctly.

Use the delivered price

Many listings show a per-round price based on the sticker alone. Shipping can easily add several cents per round, especially on smaller orders. Always divide the full delivered price by the round count.

Delivered cost per round = (sticker price + shipping + any fees) ÷ number of rounds

Compare like with like

Two listings for the same caliber can be very different products. Before comparing prices, check that these details match:

A quick example

ListingPriceShippingRoundsPer round
50-round box$16.99$12.0050$0.580
1,000-round case$289.99Free1,000$0.290

The box looks cheap at $16.99, but shipping doubles its real cost per round. These numbers are illustrative, but the effect is real: small orders carry shipping costs that bulk orders spread out.

How Dialed Price handles it

Ammo listings are grouped by caliber, bullet weight, bullet type, and case material, then ranked by delivered cost per round at each quantity tier.
